At his fifteen month check-up, Sam's pediatrician noted some concerns about his development. Since that time, he has enrolled with an early childhood intervention program and is currently seen by four specialists several times a month. He's also seen a neurologist who has ordered lots of tests for him, but tells us that he feels they will come back as negative. The neurologist says that at that point, he will diagnose Sam as autistic.
The neurologist had a bleak outlook for Sam's future, saying that we would face a long pattern of trial and error to find the right drugs to help him.
We found a doctor who tries several different approaches to autism treatment (that don't include drugs). We think she's really neat and think that she could make a huge difference in Sam's life. Our insurance, however, won't pay for us to see her or any of the necessary tests.
I built this site with the hopes that a little bit at a time, people could pitch in to help Sam. We don't have much money, we struggle to make ends meet every month, and the medical bills we would incur by seeing this doctor would undoubtedly put us under. Its a terrible feeling, knowing that someone is out there who could help Sam and that we don't have the money to pay them.
I know this is an odd way to go about things, its very humbling to ask strangers for money on the internet. I just didn't know what else to do. And there's nothing I wouldn't do for my Sam.
